SHINGLES (HERPES ZOSTER)

SHINGLES, A PAINFUL DISEASE

Shingles or herpes zoster is caused by a virus. It is the same virus which causes chickenpox. If one contracts chickenpox, after the disease course is finished, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in the nerve cells.
As we get older for, various reasons, there is a chance that this dormant virus can become active again. Once it does it manifests itself in the form of blister like skin rashes, which are usually in a pattern on the nerve involved, on one side of the body. There may or may not be a tingling sensation before these lesions appear. However, once the rashes do appear they can be very painful. Any part of the body can be involved in this disease, for example back, neck, face and even the eyes.
