Series 2 – Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10)

Ubiquinone, Ubidecarenone, or Coenzyme Q-10, are other names for what is commonly known as CoQ10.
This supplement resembles a vitamin.
It is mostly in organs which have the highest energy requirement, such as the heart, kidneys, pancreas and liver.
It is believed some chronic diseases such heart disease, cancer, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy etc. decrease the amount of CoQ10 in the body. Furthermore, there is evidence medications, such beta blockers and other blood pressure lowering agents and statins (used for decreasing cholesterol) decrease the amount of COQ10 in the body. CoQ10 is also decreased with age and smoking.
CoQ10 is used by many for help in many different situations, such as preserving the integrity of blood vessels, congestive heart failure, diabetes, gum disease, lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and chest pain.
Co Q10 is also used in lessening the side effects of blood pressure medication, statins, and hair loss due to warfarin (a blood thinning agent).
This vitamin –like supplement, CoQ10, also has energy producing properties. CoQ10 can be beneficial in increasing exercise tolerance. It is therefore, used by many for this purpose.
Co Q10 is available is small amounts in meats and seafood. Due to the small amount of availability through diet, it is used mostly as a supplement.
