MESOTHERAPY

MESOTHERAPY

Mesotherapy is a combination of two Greek words, Mesos meaning “middle” and therapeia meaning “to treat medically”.
Mesotherapy originated in France by Dr. Michel Pistor and has been performed since 1952. It was more predominant in Europe; however it has gained considerable momentum in the United States as well.
Mesotherapy is used for several different treatments. This involves the delivery of a series of small injections in the subcutaneous fat, or the fat underneath the skin. The injections consist of vitamins, minerals, and medications to increase oxygen profusion to the targeted area.
Mesotherapy is used in dissolving fat cells in stubborn areas (sometimes referred to as the French weight loss method), reducing bags under eyes, reducing double chins or loose fat hanging from triceps, and improving acne scars.
Except for a couple of exceptions there is virtually no down time. Depending on the treatment area some patients experience a slight discomfort for a few hours.
Results of Mesotherapy treatment are best assessed a few weeks after treatment. The number of treatments typically average about 3 series of injections, usually once a month. However, each individual’s response to treatment may differ. Therefore, the number and interval of treatments may differ from one person to another.

SUPPLEMENTS, ARE THEY FOR YOU ? PART 2

Series 2 – Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10)

Ubiquinone, Ubidecarenone, or Coenzyme Q-10, are other names for what is commonly known as CoQ10.
This supplement resembles a vitamin.
It is mostly in organs which have the highest energy requirement, such as the heart, kidneys, pancreas and liver.
It is believed some chronic diseases such heart disease, cancer, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy etc. decrease the amount of CoQ10 in the body. Furthermore, there is evidence medications, such beta blockers and other blood pressure lowering agents and statins (used for decreasing cholesterol) decrease the amount of COQ10 in the body. CoQ10 is also decreased with age and smoking.
CoQ10 is used by many for help in many different situations, such as preserving the integrity of blood vessels, congestive heart failure, diabetes, gum disease, lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, and chest pain.
Co Q10 is also used in lessening the side effects of blood pressure medication, statins, and hair loss due to warfarin (a blood thinning agent).
This vitamin –like supplement, CoQ10, also has energy producing properties. CoQ10 can be beneficial in increasing exercise tolerance. It is therefore, used by many for this purpose.
Co Q10 is available is small amounts in meats and seafood. Due to the small amount of availability through diet, it is used mostly as a supplement.

SUPPLEMENTS, ARE THEY FOR YOU ?

SERIES 1-BERBERINE
In the fast pace lifestyles of today, some are quick in prescribing medications. We want to either prevent certain diseases or to get to results very quickly. Therefore, we might forget natural products, vitamins, and supplements as viable choices, often with fewer side effects than prescription medications.
In the series of blogs we will be discussing a supplement in each session. Without a shadow of a doubt you do need to disclose the vitamins and supplements you are taking or plan to take, to your physician and pharmacist.
Berberine is found in several plants such as European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, phellodendron, and tree turmeric and has a long history of use in Chinese medicine.
One of the main actions of Berberine is to activate an enzyme in cells. This particular enzyme is often referred to as the “metabolic master switch”. Therefore, the benefits of Berberine are considered in several treatment regimens.
Berberine can be beneficial in regulating blood glucose levels, blood lipid (cholesterol and triglyceride) levels, cause weight loss, improve heart health, and many more.
Berberine lowers blood glucose levels considerably. Its effectiveness has been comparable to Metformin (Glucophage- a prescription medication).
It lowers the bad lipids in the blood while increasing the good cholesterol (HDL).
It decreases the chances of death in heart failure patients.
Berberine is also a very good anti-infective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and it helps reduce fat build up in the liver.

SHINGLES (HERPES ZOSTER)

SHINGLES, A PAINFUL DISEASE

Shingles or herpes zoster is caused by a virus. It is the same virus which causes chickenpox. If one contracts chickenpox, after the disease course is finished, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in the nerve cells.
As we get older for, various reasons, there is a chance that this dormant virus can become active again. Once it does it manifests itself in the form of blister like skin rashes, which are usually in a pattern on the nerve involved, on one side of the body. There may or may not be a tingling sensation before these lesions appear. However, once the rashes do appear they can be very painful. Any part of the body can be involved in this disease, for example back, neck, face and even the eyes.

Shingle

Shingles (HERPES ZOSTER)

The chances of contracting shingles is highest between the ages 50 -80, if caught in time there are remedies to decrease the severity of this disease. Patients usually become aware of shingles when the skin rashes have appeared and there is extreme pain.
Sometimes after the disease has finished its course, the pain can linger on for months, this is called postherpetic neuralgia.
At our office there are unique treatments rendered which have shown great success in decreasing the pain associated with shingles. There are remedies for pain during the course of shingles and if the pain lingers on, postherpetic neuralgia.

PROLOTHERAPY

PROLOTHERAPY

Many people suffer from back, neck, knee, wrist , or ankle pain. The typical courses of therapy after radiographic studies are cortisone shots and/or surgery.
A lot of people however, do not wish to have cortisone shots or surgery due to the side effects and risks.
Prolotherapy is an alternative treatment, worth considering. This treatment is a series of injections given at the site of pain and discomfort. These shots enable the body to work with the body’s own response to enable it to repair itself.
Prolotherapy injections consist of natural elements and vitamins which the body is familiar with and can use to perfuse the painful area with a good blood supply to bring in all the necessary responses by the body to repair the area.
Prolotherapy is usually administered as a series of injection. There may be a repeat of these injections needed depending on each person’s bodily response.
Unlike cortisone shots and other mainstream treatments, which want an immediate decrease of inflammation, Prolotherapy works by causing a flare up of the painful joint. This enables the repair of the joint by the body’s own repair system. As the body repairs its joint the inflammation goes down. There is very little discomfort for 24 to 48 hours associated with this process which starts with the prolotherapy shots.

Pre and Probiotics

PRE AND PROBIOTICS
There are lots of studies and discussions on the subject and probiotics and prebiotics. Let’s explore what each one of these terms mean and why we may benefit from using foods and/or supplements which contain these products.
Our gut, more specifically our large intestines, contain both good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria help regulate our digestive system. Almost 80% of our immune system is also supported through our digestive tract. Therefore, there is great evidence we can benefit from these good and helpful bacteria. This is where the role of Probiotics becomes significant.
The good bacteria in themselves need a source of fuel to continue with their beneficial role in our bodies. This is where the role of Prebiotics becomes significant.
Our bodies tend to suffer most when there is a disturbance between the good and bad bacteria. This disturbance in the balance can be due to metabolic reactions, infections, or medications administered. Inflammation in our bodies when none is needed for bodily functions, infectious diarrhea, and diarrhea associated with antibiotic use are some causes respectively. Inflammation in our bodies can lead to chronic problems and illnesses, whereas infections and medication use can cause acute discomforts.
Chronic illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), eczema, repetitive urinary tract infections without an external cause, indigestion and inefficient motility of food, suboptimal oral health and vaginal health to name a few are alleviated with bringing back the balance of good and bad bacteria by Probiotics.
Probiotics such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, supply the good bacteria to the gut so that the body may decrease it’s inflammation and get the chronic illness under control. Furthermore, Probiotics also provide a physical barrier to inhibit harmful bacteria in the gut to get absorbed in the body and cause a wider range of problems. Probiotics also supply the good bacteria when the body is depleted of them by infectious diarrheas or diarrheas due to antibiotic use.
The above information definitely warrant the use of Pobiotics, but a few questions arise, as to the role of Prebiotics, the reason for the need to take these supplement, and if oral supplements will be beneficial.
Prebiotics are the food supply for Probiotics. They are the fiber material not digestible by humans but only of use to bacteria. It is best to take these supplements before probiotics.
Probiotics to summarize are beneficial for chronic disease, allergies, decreasing internal organ inflammation, moving food more effectively though the intestinal tract, and supporting the immune system.
Our food sources have changed throughout years and we do not get all the material needed in for our bodies. There are foods fortified with Pro or Pre biotic but not enough of these foods are ingested to warrant a healthy gut and therefore, a healthy person.
Therefore using Prebiotics and Probiotics are a good investment to approach a healthy body.
